Technology continues to thrive, advance, and improve the world around us. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an advancement in technology and computer science that continues to grow and quickly progress. AI is a computer system’s ability to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.  As an example, with AI, computers are becoming effective at learning, problem-solving and pattern recognition. In many different industries, AI has been a breakthrough technology and has improved the industry’s way of doing business. However, there are also industries that may be better off never using AI.  I’ll briefly touch on on a few of the industries where AI is, and is, not making major inroads:

Healthcare Industry

The largest industry that has benefited from AI is the Healthcare industry. AI is known for its incredible ability to store huge amounts of complicated data. The healthcare industry must always have individual patient information, medical records, and treatment information accessible to it at all times. The technology was once limited by the amount of data that could be stored, but data storage advancements and AI completely changed that. Not only can AI leverage massive amounts of patient and medical data for the healthcare industry, but it can also interpret it on a human level. This leads to better treatment and greater understanding of complicated medical conditions.

Real Estate Industry

Another industry that has been taken by storm by AI is the real estate industry. From marketing options, buyer outreach, investing, and to property values, AI has made a tremendous difference. The real estate industry thrives on the awareness of market trends, sometimes before the trend begins. With the help of AI technology, professionals within the industry are able to gather data such as mortgage, environmental risk, and neighborhood characteristic to determine the market value of the property. They’re also able to evaluate the soundness of a potential investment or the critical moments to reduce exposure.

Education

The field of education is constantly changing and has also reaped the benefits of AI technology. Educators are now able to interact with their students in new and unique ways. Students are now better engaged through the use of education-specific apps for project-based learning. They are also now receiving a more personalized approach to learning. Through advanced technology, students are able to experience “blended learning” in which teachers will work with a student to merge in-person learning with technology. Educators are also now able to reach their students to answer any questions or provide a better understanding of the material through interactive online resources.  As simple as it sounds, distance and separation is now almost irrelevant.

Customer Service

Although AI has made a huge impact with respect to communication in most industries, customer service is not one of them. When it comes to disgruntled or upset customers, talking with a computer or meandering through voice prompts never seems to help the situation or to appease the customer.  Most would agree that dealing with an actual human is preferred. AI has the potential to hold and interpret massive amounts of complicated data, but there are some questions, concerns, or human emotion recognition that only humans can process and address. Using platforms like chatbots have great benefits such as faster communication, but there are still setbacks. Chatbots have limited responses and customers can become easily frustrated when talking with a computer. There are still some jobs that only humans are able to do.

Yes, there are ongoing hiccups and setbacks with AI.  However, even with the setbacks, AI is clearly part of the future of most industries. As the technology continues to advance, the setbacks ought to diminish significantly.
